The pressure of the palm mute can also be altered for different effect throughout the piece e.g. To keep the bass staccato palm mute the 4th, 5th and 6th strings. This leaves three fingers free for chords and melody. In A Testament, until the end when a chromatic element is added, the bass pattern can be played with a bar on the 4th, 5th and 6th strings on any fret (or open). This tuning not only has a lovely resonance to it, but can also free up fingers. The story goes that Skip was taught this tuning by Henry Stuckey who in turn learnt it from some Bahamian soldiers in the trenches of World War II. I first came across this tuning from Skip James who used it in tracks like Devil Got My Woman and Hard Time Killing Floor Blues.
